Normal goods handling - Packages [GUIDE]

Normal goods handling of packages - up to 35kg

For one package, life can be hard at times - normal handling is a pretty tough journey with a lot of machine handling and it can get crowded along with many other packages.

Download
When the driver comes to pick up packages, they often have a package cart with them which they load several boxes on and roll out to the car.
In the car, packages of all different sizes must be load-secured during transport. It can be done e.g. through sacks, boxes or cages in the car in which the packages are placed.
Alternatively, ready-made shelving systems that are built into the car. A van can drive between 35-50 stops in one day depending on the area.
It is therefore important that everything is ready when the driver arrives to pick up. They rarely have time to wait for the packages to be ready while they are with you.
In rural areas, it is common for a larger distribution truck to drive packages. Then the packages must be combined with pallets and other heavy goods during transport.

Terminal & sorting
When the car is ready for the day and has returned to the terminal, they empty the car of all packages. You do not leave anything on the car during the night.
The pacts are laid out on a sorting track where they are then sorted through a system of conveyor belts and slides.
While the packages are on the belt, you weigh the goods, check the measurements and match them to the booking.
All information you provided on the booking can be obtained via the barcode on the package. The machines do not read any other information on the package than the barcode.
It is therefore very important that:
There are no old barcodes on the goods
That you enter correct information when booking
That the barcode is clearly readable by the machines, on a flat surface and not covered by e.g. straps
That the package can be handled regardless of which side is up
Packing fragile goods correctly - Aktas notes cannot be read by the machines

Package machine sorting
In the final stage of sorting, the packages are dropped into cages. The fall into the cage can be as high as 1.5m - if the package is first down into an empty cage.
Keep in mind that each package can weigh up to 35kg when it is dragged into a sorting cage.
The cages with packages are then loaded onto trucks that drive the goods on to the next terminal.
During transport, the cages must be load-secured on the bed. This is often done with straps that are tightened properly around the cages and put additional pressure on the goods.
During the journey, the goods will rub and press against each other in the cage at the same time as it is exposed to vibrations and sensations from the movements of the vehicle.

Delivery
When the truck arrives, the cages are unloaded and depending on how far the goods are to travel, it may be that the cages are only moved to a new truck or that they are sorted again. To then be loaded on a delivery truck and driven out either to a delivery point or directly to a recipient. If the delivery of the package is to be announced, it will be at the terminal for at least 1 extra day

During normal handling of a package, it is exposed to:

Repeated vibrations
Uneven pressure and uneven stacking
Falls of up to 1.5m
That goods of up to 35kg are dropped on top of your goods

Appropriate packaging of packages means that the packaging must protect the goods against quite a lot of stress in the form of it being possible to shake, drop to the ground and drop other things on top of it. How much it needs to be depends on what kind of goods it is in the package.

If it is fragile and heavy in itself, more packaging is needed than if the product is durable and does not weigh as much.
It is not possible to package a vase in the same way as a stuffed animal. - This is the meaning of appropriate packaging.
The package's job is to protect the product inside.
